Ninetieth Anniversary of Ground Breaking Charles Lindbergh Flight
Today people fly between Europe and America with little thought of the trials and tribulations of pioneering aviators that enabled regular transatlantic flights. In May 1927 one man flew alone from New York to Paris for over 33 hours, without stopping for food, fuel or sleep. Overnight this pilot, Charles Lindbergh, became one of the most famous men in the world.
Charles Lindbergh’s triumphant transatlantic arrival at Paris on 21 May 1927 was followed by a flight on 29 May to London Croydon Airport, the UK’s international airport. Lindbergh was mobbed by crowds and Croydon saw its first ever traffic jam. Over 100,000 people tried to see the famous aviator, whose historic flight paved the way for civil aviation from America to Europe. It was also the first time that parts of newly constructed London Croydon Airport, now the Grade II listed Airport House were used. The growth of the airport helped to transform Croydon into an industrialised and hi-tech town.
A special mini-exhibition at Airport House sets to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the 1927 transatlantic flight of Charles Lindbergh from New York to Paris, and his arrival at London Croydon Airport. On Sunday 4 June 2017 only, a scale model of Lindbergh’s famous Spirit of St Louis aeroplane will be on display for visitors to see (kindly loaned by Brian Rice and assisted by the Croydon Airport and Caterham & District Model Flying Clubs). New exhibition panels, a handout, children’s activity sheet and film footage will be available on both Sunday 4 June and Sunday 25 June, when the Croydon Airport Visitor Centre opens as part of the Croydon Heritage Festival.
Model, display and activity sheets: Sunday 4 June: doors open 11am - 3pm (closes 4pm)
